A conversation with Prof. Jere R. Behrman: medium- and long-term benefits of universal compulsory preschool education in Mexico

Over the past two decades, several Latin American countries have expanded the availability of preschool and made attendance compulsory. In 2002, Mexico launched a reform requiring three years of preschool before entry into primary school, introducing the requirement gradually.

Using national longitudinal administrative education data, household survey data, and a quasi-experimental regression discontinuity approach, the study examined the reform’s medium- and long-term effects. Results showed improved fifth- and sixth-grade math and Spanish cognitive scores, stronger non-cognitive skills, increased student engagement, lower failure rates, and higher educational achievement among young adults nearly twenty years after the reform.

Jere Richard Behrman is an American economist and William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. The event was scheduled for October 26 at 8:00 EST and also available online.
